Look both ways

Clarence | My Life | Thursday, August 10th, 2006

I’m a city boy. Specifically, I’m a New York City boy. What’s the difference you ask? We don’t follow traffic signals. We cross whenever and wherever we want. We’re tough; because damnit, we’re New Yorkers.

This morning as I was walking to work, I came upon an intersection with a Don’t Walk signal against me. I quickly glanced up the street and strode across the crosswalk. As I crossed I overheard a woman teaching her child, “Now look both ways before you cross! Oh look! There’s a car! Plus, it says don’t walk!”

And there I was, crossing the street on a Don’t Walk signal, with a taxi barrelling down half a block away. As I quickened my step, I overheard the little girl say, “But Mommy! He just crossed…”

I’m a great role model.
